Book Review: You Don’t Look Sick – Living Well With Invisible Chronic Illness
When I first saw the title of this book, I was obviously intrigued, since the name of my website is Butyoudontlooksick.com. I knew the author and I would have some things in common. This book is a simple journal type chronicle of the life of a woman dealing with a chronic illness.
The reader follows the story of Joy, as she goes from getting sick to diagnosis and beyond. This is a very personal first-hand experience book, with just the right balance of a medical doctor’s perspective sprinkled throughout.
As I read this book, I found myself feeling such compassion for the author, as I know what it is like to struggle with the ups and downs of a chronic invisible disease. Although, please note, since this book is written from the
specific personal journey of the author, the reader might not necessarily identify with the specific stories of symptoms, and progression of her disease. Everyone has different experiences and it is important as you read this book to look at how Joy is effected and how she deals with these symptoms. It is uplifting to read along as you “watch” Joy go on the long journey from fear to acceptance, with both humor and grace. Although Joy was able, in time, to manage her disease and even go on to take part in a show for a 3 week run- there are others who may not be able to take such liberties. The author was blessed to find a balance with her care, which let her live some of her dreams. I feel for those who unfortunately may not be able to do so.
Overall, I found this “journal- type” paperback book a quick read and would recommend it to others. The short chapters will be easy to read, for those who have fatigue or concentration problems. I did enjoy learning about the life of someone else dealing with similar experiences.
