Book Review: The Healing Power of Humor written by Allen Klein

I can vouch that humor is healing. Being 57 now and having several bumps in the road of life, I’ve learned that it’s much better to laugh than to cry! Mr. Klein points out this book has techniques for getting through loss, setbacks, upsets, disappointments, difficulties, trials, tribulations, and all that not-so-funny stuff. And he uses humor to do it all!

Those moments when you let go and have a really good belly laugh over some silly moment really do make you feel better. I know that from experience.
This book shows you how to turn around your attitude, how to find the humor in any situation (sometimes you have to wait a while before it’s funny, it’s not at the time), how to add a funny word or action to what you ask or do and encourage having fun and laughter.
He begins with learning to laugh. Why you should, what you get, and how to be careful about humor risks. Everyone’s sense of humor is different – you want to be funny, but you don’t want to offend anyone.
Then he offers techniques for getting through tough times, like illness or depression. Keep items that make you smile or laugh. It might be a personal memory and mean nothing to anyone else. It might be a joke you cut out of the paper or print off the net. Use affirmations to make you feel better – they work, I’ve used them for years.
As for jokes, I have one on my fridge of one old lady walking two other old ladies who are saying, Look, Edith has a hickey! (His false teeth are still attached to her neck…) My husband and I love it and smile every time we see it!
He suggests using smiles to make life better, tells you how to make molehills out of mountains, teaches you to “let go” of bad feelings, and how to find an advantage in your disadvantage.

While death is sad, he suggests you look for laughter there, also. People who are dying would rather laugh and enjoy the time they have left, not sit in a sterile, serious world and have nothing to think about except how much time they have left. It can be hard to do this, but he offers good suggestions on how to do it.
There are lots of anecdotes, jokes, and references within the book to help you on your quest to get more laughter into your life.
If you are overwhelmed, out of ideas or too tired to think clearly, this book will help you put some joy back in your life. And laughter makes you healthier, so how could it hurt?
I’m going to give my copy of this book away, so visit my blog. and read the post about this book there, leave me a comment, and send me an email to be in the drawing for it.
