Book Review: The Secret Life of a Snowbird by Len Schritter
Need something to lift your spirits? Try Mr. Schritter’s book, “An Inside Look at Retirement in America’s Sunbelt.”
He writes with good humor and good spirit about his life in Idaho during the farming part of the year (he actually DOES grow potatoes on his farm) and about how happy he is to morph over into his “snowbird” phase and run away to Arizona.
He and his wife get along well and enjoy their vacation. Who from the Northwest doesn’t love living in the sun in wintertime? There’s lots to do (and some he wishes he hadn’t done), he learns to play Bingo after having his dauber rubbed by someone’s lucky pig (no joke…), he succumbs to watching a burlesque show (yes, he takes his wife), and he begins to observe how age works on us all.
He sees a lady get lost at the post office, has an elderly neighbor friend, and it begins to hit home that we all get to that stage after a while.
But, while he can, he visits Mexico and drinks too many marguerites, goes to the flea market and almost gets flogging for having his wife snag a table before he gets back with the chili dogs (from a very long line). Before they finish their chili dogs, they already have two more ladies join them to “protect” the table. It reminds me of going camping at Kalaloch, down on the beach of Washington – folks were predators there waiting for the “best” campsites to become available. (I once had a guy offer me $150 for the spot I was holding for my husband when he came down later that night with the motorhome – sorry, no sale.)
No matter what happens to him in Arizona, it’s better than watching the “Top Ten Beaches” in Idaho while it snows outside!
This is a very enjoyable read. If you think you’d be interesting in it, visit my blog:

It’s good clean fun and will make you laugh!
