Book Review: The Checklist By: Manny Alvarez, M.D

The Checklist presents itself as a manual or guideline to a healthy lifestyle; just follow the steps using the “Decade by Decade Health Maintenance Plan”, and you will stay as healthy as possible. Though the concept brought out the skeptic in me, as I read through the chapters, which are organized by decade, I found Dr. Alvarez to be informative and friendly to those who do not have a medical background.

The language is easy to understand, and while I initially found some of the tips and pointers to be stating common sense (example: no smoking around the baby), in the spirit of being an all inclusive manual for any and all readers, it’s probably best to include every last detail no matter how obvious.
The book is well organized, with witty and humorous lines mixed in with quality information. Of course, being a reader of ButYouDontLookSick.com, it was nice to see a substantial section devoted to several autoimmune diseases including Lupus. Each chapter ends with a “checklist” summary, giving the reader a manageable list of concerns and tasks for each respective decade in life.
Overall, the information in this book is very useful, nicely presented, and is great for people who like working with lists to keep themselves on track. Dr. Alvarez supports his statements with statistical evidence and provides a useful directory of resources as well as a master checklist of tests and vaccinations.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an all inclusive guide to developing good health habits, parenting, and helping to deal with the curveballs that life tends to throw throughout our years.
