Far From Home or Confined at Home? Giving Can Be Better Than Receiving!
Far From Home or Confined at Home?
Want to spread some holiday cheer, but you can’t do it in person?
I have a few hints for you. I moved to New Mexico from Washington state and it’s 2,000 miles home now. No more Christmas Eve at his Mom’s and Christmas Day at my Mom’s. Sigh…
So I send a card, here and there, for no rhyme or reason. Find one in the card drawer (or pile) you have at home and add a note and just send it out. Surprise them!
You can even make your own. Either on the computer (there are some you can print for free, or you can buy a greeting card program and use that) or you can be crafty and make your own. A few rubber stamps, maybe some glitter, a few stickers, maybe some rick rack – just be creative. It’s from you, personalize it with your touch!
I also send little presents now and then. Nothing expensive. Most of the time it’s items I have around the house. A little memo pad, figurine, some yarn, a crocheted doily – something I run across and think “so and so” would like that – so I share it!
When I do my Christmas cards, I give them a Christmas letter. It’s just one page, gives them a synopsis of what has happened to us this year, highlights and lowlights. Friends and family love it!
I send some in cards at Christmas, others I simply email.
Share a “spoon” with folks. If you’re well enough to bake or craft, send them something you’ve made. Visit the dollar store and pick up some pretties. They don’t have to be expensive to be appreciated.
Most people just want to be thought of – and little affirmations of that make people smile.
Try it, it’s not hard. And it’s very rewarding.
I send cards to folks who are “forgotten”. They’re in nursing homes and have no visitors, are disabled and alone, have lost family or friends and are feeling lost. It takes a bit of time to do, but the smiles on their faces are worth it. I go through the list and send to as many as I can.
Giving is actually better than receiving – OK, almost… 🙂
