Poetry: Life Is Not Easy

A poem submitted by one of our readers, Amy Burg.

Life is not easy,
Life is not fair.
Sometimes you need a little extra help,
A little extra care.
I needed to see a doctor,
I needed to see someone quick.
For the longer I had to wait,
The more and more I was getting sick.
Arriving at the hospital,
I feel a little bit of fear.
For I don’t know how the tests will go,
And what might appear.
I had a big day ahead of me,
A day of many tests.
Finding our way through the hospital,
Now that was a real quest.
I had to get my blood drawn,
That was the first on the list.
They cleaned my arm,
And told me to clench my fist.
Other tests came and gone,
I began to feel tired.
How could children do this everyday,
When all of these tests are required?
The truth really started to set in,
This was no ordinary day.
The rest of my life could change,
Depending on what the doctors had to say.
The doctors came in,
And told us the news.
Then they gave us the options,
It was time for us to choose.
I visit the doctor,
Sometimes twice in one week.
They always do some testing,
Because my condition is very unique.
The doctors prescribe my medications,
Usually by adding another pill.
They come in all shapes and colors,
Helping me from getting ill.
I would do anything to be a normal girl,
To not have to worry.
What the weather is going to be like,
If there is going to be a snow flurry.
I used to love to play sports,
I played them all of the time.
Mainly playing volleyball, basketball, and softball,
But I could even rock climb.
My family and friends are great support,
They help me along my way.
They made me a stronger person,
The one I am today.
My problem has no cure,
My problem cannot be fixed.
I have a disease that is
Lupus, Arthritis, and Scleroderma all mixed.
Going through what I have,
I decided to make a change.
I want to find out the answers,
For my disease is so strange.
Life is not easy,
Life is not fair.
Sometimes you need a little extra help,
A little extra care.
