Book Review: Persistence is Power! A Real-World Guide for the Newly Disabled Employee
written by: Jeanne Lazo & Carol J. Amato
When you unfortunately become disabled the world is spinning and you are overwhelmed by many stresses; including bills, paperwork and fears. You may even be angry and depressed and sometimes these feelings stop us from applying for disability or making the right choices for ourselves and our families.
This book takes you step by step through many of the decision making and options associated with becoming disabled. It helps you gain control by providing easy to understand information and useful checklists and forms.
The first chapter starts very simply with information on how to get started and suggestions on what to do first. Other chapters help you understand all the legal and medical jargon, which can be both frightening and overwhelming.By the time you are finished reading this book, you will feel like a "pro" and you will have an action plan in place. Even if all the chapters do not necessarily pertain to your circumstance, it is an interesting quick read, with useful tips bolded and outlined in blue.
Whether you are applying for Social Security disability, worker’s compensation, or disability insurance, this book will help you through the often times tedious process. This book not only deals with the financial and legal aspects of disability, but with the emotional and psychological aspects of the loss of work and money. This can be an extremely difficult time in a person’s life and I think having this book as a resource would help tremendously. You can tell by reading this book that the author has dealt with this process from personal experience. She speaks with respect for the difficult choices the newly disabled person has to make. She spends an entire chapter discussing some of the emotional aspects and coping strategies associated with becoming disabled. This in itself dhows that the author is someone who understands what it is like to live through this experience.
I feel so strongly that this book would be an asset to anyone even thinking about these choices. Before going to a lawyer, or getting confused by the enormous amount of advice on the internet, get this book and get educated
on your rights. I wish they had this book when I was forced to stop working because of my disability- maybe I would not have grown so frustrated or made so many mistakes. Even now, years later, I learned so much after reading this book, that I am going to make a new "to do list" for tomorrow morning!
