Learn about Antiphospholipid Syndrome as we recognize APS Awareness Day!

Sometimes known as “sticky blood” but more commonly known as APS, Antiphospholipid Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which the body recognizes certain normal components of blood and/or cell membranes as foreign substances and produces antibodies against them. Patients with these antibodies may experience blood clots, including heart attacks and strokes, and miscarriages. APS may occur in people with systemic lupus erythematosus, other autoimmune diseases, or in otherwise healthy individuals. More APS information can be found at: http://www.apsfa.org

  • i too am so grateful for a community of people that close there tear filled eyes with compassion as opposed to my real world where they just roll their eyes…Lupus has broken my heart because it has shown me some truths about the ones i guarded and trusted that until now id chosen to pretend werent real

I hadnt heard of APS until I was in the hospital with clots in my legs and lungs, two years ago.My sister Mary informed me at that time of some family histories on my Dad’s side I didnt know before.I have since found out that my paternal Grandfather had a clotting problem, that Mary had Lupus and MS. In an ironic twist of fate 4 of my children have the same clotting disorder. My 3rd son was in the hospital in another state with clots in his lungs. My daughter had a OB/GYN who specializes in high-risk pregnancies and the happy delivery of my granddaughter last year.I read everything I can about my conditions, which includes APS, CFS,Fibromyalgia,COPD and AI hepatitis. So far I have tested negative for Lupus.I wish the Drs in this area had more knowledge on APS,as when I was in the ER earlier this year.I had lost my eyesight temporarily and had chest pains. After 5 hrs I was told it was gas and go home.My eye Dr had more knowledge about APS, than the ER Drs.I am so grateful th the people I have made friends with thru facebook.

Sadly, APS is another chronic illness that needs a LOT more awareness. In addition to have SLE, I also have APS and a few other autoimmune diseases. I currently have 2 blood clots in my arm. Thanks for raising awareness about this!

APS is a very complex disease. Thank you for raising more awreness of this condition that even many doctors do not know about or do not know how to treat.
