My Favorite Ways to Entertain a Child, Sick or Well!
One of the best things to do when your wee one is sick is take some time with them and read to them. You can hold them in your lap while you do, so they can see the illustrations, too. Or, if they aren’t well enough for that, sit close to them, maybe hold their hand, and act like storytellers do – turn the book sideways so the child can follow along with you.
If they are old enough and well enough to read, keep them well stocked in library books, so they can try different kinds of writing. They can travel to different countries, take exciting adventures or learn something new, all without leaving their bed.
Don’t forget to get them some find-a-word, crossword, sudoku or connect-the-dot books. They’re not expensive and help occupy a child’s mind when they can’t move. Puzzles work too, also coloring, or paint-by-number, depending on the child’s age.
If they aren’t well enough to read or do these activities, try getting them some audio books that they can listen to. (You can get these at the library, too.) You can find almost any story on audio now, either cassette or CD. If they want fantasy, educational or a series book, they’re all there. And they won’t be bored if they are listening to a story!
You can also introduce them to some crafts. They can learn to knit or crochet, weave hotpads, put together models (including some made from wood!), make their own cards and stationery, the possibilities are endless! Just do a little searching on the internet for ideas, or buy a book with ideas. Then you can try all kinds of different activities with your child. If they center on one being their favorite, buy them supplies and let them expand on that.
While you may be weary from taking care of your child(ren), remember that you, as Mom, are the focal part of their life, and how you act influences how they feel. Gentle touches, a hand pat, a smile, and some encouragement in how well they are reading and crafting can go a long way. These activities will also enhance their motor skills and their mind power, so how can you lose?
